lay-zee...
... is pretty much how I'm feeling today. One supposes it's a pretty good day to be lazy; it's cold, windy, and just plain
ecchy outside... But I can't ignore that I have a million and one projects waiting for me inside.
For one, i've been threatening to redesign this site for what is going on an aeon. But I really just don't feel up to noodling in CSS and HTML for an afternoon.
I have a bunch of old photos that I've been meaning to scan.
I've got a couple writing projects that are floundering in various journals for the last month or two.
I have furniture and a room that I want to paint.
I recently got an art kit so I can paint pictures.
There's a bajillion CDs that I've been meaning to get loaded into my iTunes littering my workroom, dining room, and back porch.
I have a number of emails and cards I've been putting off sending for a spell as well.
I have a stack of books to read that is getting taller and taller. Currently open is
Madam Secretary, Madeline Albright's memoir, which I have to say is compelling reading. I've got another dozen books or so waiting in the wings. I do have to say choosing a book to read is a totally random exercise. I might have it for a week or a month or several years, but the time has to
feel right for me to pick it up and read it. So who knows... Maybe after I'm done with Madeline, none of the books I've got are going to tease my curiosity. More importantly though is that I am even feeling too lazy to read right now.
I've been meaning to write up my own synopses for the new
Doctor Who series that has been airing in the UK, and strangely writing that hasn't quite held any appeal for me. Frankly I'm amazed that I've gathered the energy to post here. I must be in some sort of rut.
Anyhoot. Maybe by making that list, I can inspire myself to get some items crossed off. Or not. I think I'll just make some hot chocolate, have a browning, and curl up watching reruns of
Doctor Who and
Wonder Woman (season 2)
Sin City or Sky Captain and Get Me the Hell Out of Here 2?
Meh. I just got back from seeing
Sin City, and it would appear that I'm the first person that I've heard of that was less than blown away by it. In a nutshell, I felt like I was watching
Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow all over again. The art direction was superb, scoring very well done, overall direction was good. I just was incredibly bored with the dialog and story.
I know, I know. It was directly adapted from a graphic novel. What was I expecting? I just felt like the dialog pretty much left at the 11th grade level, and while I was trying hard not to watch all the pistol whipping going on, I daydreamed about the trailer I previously saw for the
Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. The dialog was so unremarkable, I'm really not able to recall any of it at this point. The movie just leaves me with fleeting images of stylized people hitting/shooting/knifing/neutering each other. Oh, and classic cars too; those were enjoyable as well. Much like with Sky Captain, I found myself wishing someone would've ponied up for a decent Dramaturg. Just beacause the text came out of a comic book, doesn't mean the movie needs to sound like it.
I've never really been a fan of stylized violence for it's own sake. Sure if there's a plot that it's advancing, I'll bite, but when that's the whole McGuffin, I just find myself wishing I'd brought a crossword puzzle.
Like I said, so far I've only heard raves about the flick, and while I can see where some enjoyed it; I just found myself wanting those hours back so I can watch more new Doctor Who.
Meh.
Of capes and snakes...
Interview: 43Folders' Merlin Mann : Lifehacker"God knows you better not try to install Firefox and Greasemonkey on your box at work, right? That weird little MIS guy with the cape and the pet snake might totally ream you out for putting anything on your PC that he didn't expressly approve. And—as most of us eventually learn the hard way—life’s too short to argue with people in capes. "
- Merlin Mann in an interview with Lifehacker
Unfortunately this is my life; On both the
pro and
con side. I want the record to show that I don't have a cape.
